The Role

Job Description

About the Role

RUC on Rails operates multiple consumer platforms supporting Road User Charges transactions across New Zealand.

As transaction volume increases, we are establishing a structured live operations function to provide real-time oversight of platform health, transaction activity, and infrastructure status.

We are inviting expressions of interest for part-time Live Operations Coordinators to support daytime monitoring coverage from our Dunedin office.

This is an in-person role. Due to the nature of the systems involved, including oversight of revenue-linked transaction flows and sensitive operational data, monitoring is conducted within a controlled office environment.

This role is operational oversight and coordination, not customer service.

You will operate within a live monitoring environment using internal dashboards, automated alert systems, and infrastructure status panels to oversee:

  • Transaction flow and settlement activity

  • Platform uptime and service health

  • Infrastructure alerts

  • Fraud indicators and anomaly flags

  • Operational partner calls

Our systems are alert-driven. Your responsibility is to monitor, assess, coordinate, and escalate when something falls outside expected behaviour.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Monitoring live transaction dashboards and system health panels

  • Reviewing automated alerts and anomaly flags

  • Assessing infrastructure status signals and service indicators

  • Coordinating response when issues arise

  • Escalating technical matters to engineering when required

  • Handling inbound operational partner calls

  • Logging incidents clearly and accurately

  • Supporting structured internal reporting

You are not expected to resolve infrastructure issues directly. You are expected to understand what you are observing and apply sound judgement when coordinating response.

Technical Expectations

You must be technically literate.

You should understand:

  • What AWS is and how cloud infrastructure operates at a high level

  • The role of APIs, databases, authentication systems, and serverless functions

  • The difference between frontend systems and backend services

  • Concepts such as uptime, latency, service degradation, and failover

  • How transaction-based platforms behave under load

You do not need to code or configure infrastructure. However, you must be comfortable operating in a technical environment and interpreting system behaviour.

What You'll Bring

Requirements

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Calm and structured decision-making

  • Ability to work across multiple dashboards and monitoring panels

  • Clear written and verbal communication

  • Confidence following defined escalation protocols

  • Reliable and consistent attendance

Highly regarded:

  • Experience in transport, logistics, dispatch, or compliance operations

  • Experience monitoring technical systems

  • Experience in financial transaction environments

  • Familiarity with fraud monitoring

  • Understanding of New Zealand’s Road User Charges system

This role requires active presence and attentiveness during shift hours. Automated systems surface alerts, but professional oversight remains essential.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo a criminal background check as part of standard onboarding requirements.
