The Role

Job Description

About the Role

RUC on Rails operates multiple consumer platforms supporting Road User Charges transactions across New Zealand.

As we expand our live operations coverage, we will establish structured overnight monitoring to ensure continuity of oversight outside standard business hours.

We are inviting expressions of interest for Night Shift Live Operations Coordinators to provide after-hours platform monitoring from our Dunedin office.

This is an in-person role. Due to the nature of the systems involved, including oversight of revenue-linked transaction flows and sensitive operational data, monitoring is conducted within a controlled office environment.

Outside standard business hours, you will be the most senior operational presence on site.

This role carries additional responsibility. You will be entrusted with determining when issues require escalation to engineering leadership or the executive team.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Monitoring live transaction dashboards and infrastructure status panels

  • Reviewing automated alerts and anomaly flags

  • Assessing fraud indicators and unusual system behaviour

  • Coordinating initial response to incidents

  • Determining escalation thresholds during overnight periods

  • Contacting engineering or executive personnel when required

  • Logging incidents clearly and maintaining structured handover notes for the day team

You are not expected to resolve infrastructure issues directly. You are expected to exercise sound judgement when assessing the severity of incidents.

Technical Expectations

You must be technically literate and confident operating independently.

You should understand:

  • AWS and cloud infrastructure fundamentals

  • APIs, authentication systems, and database-driven platforms

  • Transaction-based system behaviour under load

  • Concepts such as service degradation, failover, and uptime risk

  • The implications of fraud flags and settlement disruption

You will not be coding or deploying infrastructure, but you must be capable of interpreting system behaviour without supervision.

What You'll Bring

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Calm decision-making in isolated or overnight environments

  • Confidence exercising independent judgement

  • Ability to assess risk and escalate appropriately

  • Clear written communication for structured handover reporting

  • Reliable attendance and professionalism

Highly regarded:

  • Experience in transport, logistics, dispatch, or compliance operations

  • Experience in financial transaction monitoring

  • Experience in after-hours operational roles

  • Familiarity with New Zealand’s Road User Charges system

This role requires attentiveness throughout rostered shift hours. While automated systems surface alerts, overnight monitoring relies heavily on individual judgement.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo a criminal background check as part of standard onboarding requirements.

What We Offer

Benefits

  • Night rates reflective of shift hours and responsibility

  • Flexible rostered scheduling within the 6pm–8am window

  • Competitive leave entitlements (pro rata)

  • Staff discounts across all RUC platforms

  • Discounts on RUC purchasing

  • Clear pathways for growth as the company scales

Our Approach

We are building a disciplined operations function designed for reliability and continuity across all hours.

We welcome expressions of interest from candidates who are confident operating independently within a secure, technically aware monitoring environment.
