The Role

Job Description

About the Role

RUC on Rails is building a consumer-focused ecosystem ahead of New Zealand’s transition to full digital Road User Charges.

Our platforms include:

  • RUC Pass – OTC retail RUC distribution

  • RUC Warehouse – Bulk purchasing platform

  • RUC Compare – Provider comparison marketplace

  • RUC Hub – Information and data platform

All core infrastructure is already built and operational. As we scale toward 2027–2028, we expect to expand the engineering team and are inviting expressions of interest from capable full-stack developers who are comfortable working across frontend, backend, and infrastructure.

This role will work closely with the Lead Developer and CTO. It is hands-on and execution-focused, contributing directly to feature delivery, optimisation, and ongoing system improvements.

What You’ll Work On

  • Building and refining features across RUC Pass, RUC Warehouse, RUC Compare and RUC Hub

  • Supporting AWS-based serverless infrastructure

  • Improving UI performance and frontend responsiveness

  • Extending APIs and backend logic

  • Assisting with transaction flow reliability and settlement integrity

  • Contributing to internal tooling and automation

This is a role for someone who is comfortable moving between layers depending on what the business requires.

Technical Environment

  • AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, Cognito, CloudFront, S3)

  • TypeScript and modern JavaScript

  • React / Next.js

  • Serverless architecture

  • CI/CD workflows

  • Proprietary internal systems

  • LLM-assisted development workflows and agentic tooling

We expect developers to be comfortable using AI tools to improve productivity and reduce repetitive workload.

What You'll Bring

Requirements

Core

  • 2+ years experience in modern JavaScript development

  • Solid experience with React and frontend component architecture

  • Working knowledge of AWS and serverless systems

  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs

  • Strong understanding of authentication and secure data handling

  • Ability to work independently within defined scope

  • Comfortable taking ownership of tasks from development through deployment

  • Confidence using AI tooling to support development workflows

Highly Regarded

  • Familiarity with New Zealand’s Road User Charges system

  • Experience in transport, logistics, or regulated operational environments

  • Experience working with transactional or payment-related systems

  • Experience improving performance and frontend optimisation

  • Exposure to infrastructure configuration or DevOps workflows

This role requires professional judgement. There will be periods of higher intensity around releases or regulatory milestones, and we value people who can step up when required.

Applicants must be based in New Zealand. Dunedin is preferred due to our office location, though remote arrangements within NZ may be considered for exceptional candidates.

What We Offer

Benefits

Benefits

  • Competitive salary depending on experience

Our Approach

We are a focused, execution-driven team building for long-term scale. We value capability, reliability, and clarity of thinking.

We welcome expressions of interest from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences who believe they can contribute meaningfully to what we are building.
