Development Update - Building RUC Pass for All of Aotearoa
We have officially moved into the development phase for RUC Pass. Designed for a 2027 launch, this platform aims to make purchasing Road User Charges as easy as buying a coffee.
After a comprehensive market research phase, the team at RUC on Rails is officially shifting gears. We have begun the active development of RUC Pass, our flagship consumer product. While the full launch is projected for the 2027–2028 window, the work happening behind the scenes right now is focused on one goal: making Road User Charges (RUC) a retail experience rather than a bureaucratic chore.
Our research highlighted a significant gap in the current system. Many rural and remote communities in New Zealand often feel overlooked by digital-only government shifts. For those living miles from a major centre or struggling with patchy internet, managing vehicle compliance shouldn't be a mission. RUC Pass is being built to bridge that gap, offering a "your way" approach that works just as well at a local country store as it does on a smartphone.
"We spent months listening to drivers, from student commuters to super gold card holders," says Adam Johnston, CEO. "The message was clear: people want choice. They want to be able to top up their RUC while they’re grabbing milk or filling up the ute. We’re building RUC Pass to be a disruptive alternative that fits into the existing rhythm of New Zealand life."
While we are keeping some cards close to our chest, we can confirm that we have already secured several major national partnerships. These collaborations will provide us with a retail footprint of over 2,000 locations nationwide, ensuring that every New Zealander regardless of how remote they are has a convenient place to manage their charges. We look forward to officially announcing these partners over the coming months.
Technically, the product is being built on a foundation of "Security by Design." Briyarne, our CTO, and the engineering team are currently finalising the integration specs that allow for seamless POS (Point of Sale) transactions.
"The tech needs to be invisible," Briyarne explains. "When a staff member at a retail partner scans a RUC Pass, the backend should handle the complexity in milliseconds. We’re using an extremely modern stack to ensure that whether you’re linking a vehicle or topping up a Student Pass, the experience is fluid and secure."
We are currently inviting users to join our Early Access programme. By signing up now, you'll be the first to receive development updates and exclusive launch-window offers as we move toward our pilot testing phase.
The road to 2027 is a long one, but we are committed to building a system that finally puts the driver in the driver's seat.
