Development Update - RUC Compare Goes Autonomous with Kowalski
We are officially halfway through the development of RUC Compare. Thanks to our new Kowalski engine, the platform is now powered by autonomous data mapping, ensuring we compare the entire market.
The development of RUC Compare has just hit a major second wind. While we are roughly halfway through the build, a massive internal milestone has changed the game for us: the completion of Kowalski, our proprietary market intelligence and structural monitoring engine.
Until now, gathering RUC rates and service data was a manual, time-consuming process. While most providers make their rates publicly available, they are often buried in inconsistent tables or deep within PDF disclosures. Kowalski has automated this entire pipeline. It now acquires, structures, and monitors information across the RUC ecosystem autonomously, meaning RUC Compare will stay up-to-date with sub-millisecond precision without the need for manual data entry.
This technical leap allows us to double down on our "public interest" promise. We have noted that many comparison sites (won't name names), but the pattern is clear often only show plans and rates from providers who pay a commission or a listing fee to be there. We think that model is a disservice to New Zealanders.
"We are not interested in the 'pay-to-play' model," says Adam Johnston, CEO. "If a provider exists in the New Zealand market, they will be on RUC Compare. Our mission is to show you the whole market, not just the parts that are commercially convenient for us. By using Kowalski to scrape factual, public data, we can ensure our comparisons are truly comprehensive and unbiased."
Of course, there will be a commercial element to the platform traffic brings potential, and we will have clearly labelled 'Featured' sections and 'Deals' for providers who want to highlight special offers. However, these will never come at the expense of the data. You will always be able to sort by the objectively lowest price or the highest verified rating, regardless of who has a partnership with us.
Briyarne, our CTO, is currently focused on the "Accessibility Scoring" logic now that Kowalski is feeding in a steady stream of service data. "Now that the data acquisition is autonomous, we can spend our time on the high-value features," Briyarne explains. "We are currently perfecting the 3D flip-cards for the mobile view, ensuring that even with a massive dataset, the experience remains fast and fluid."
RUC Compare is on track to bring a new level of sunlight to the industry. We are building the tools to ensure that for the first time, Kiwi drivers can see the full picture.
