RUC Pass App Officially Launches !

Thursday, 16 July 2026

The RUC Pass app is officially live, giving New Zealand drivers a straightforward new way to buy Road User Charges online and manage vehicle compliance from one place.

Available across iOS, Android and the web, RUC Pass has been designed for everyday drivers who want a simpler way to understand, purchase and keep track of RUC without installing hardware or continuously sharing their vehicle’s location.

The launch follows months of product development, testing and direct consumer research by the RUC on Rails team.

“Our goal was never to take the existing RUC experience and simply squeeze it into an app,” says Adam Johnston, founder and CEO of RUC on Rails.

“We wanted to understand what regular New Zealand drivers actually need, then build something around simplicity, control and privacy.”

RUC Pass has been developed under the technical leadership of Briyarne Pascoe, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of RUC on Rails, who has overseen the platform architecture, vehicle-data integrations, ordering systems and delivery across mobile and web.

“RUC is a regulated product, so the experience has to feel simple for the customer while handling a lot of complexity behind the scenes,” says Pascoe.

“We have focused on making it fast, reliable and easy to understand, whether someone is managing one vehicle or several.”

What drivers can do with RUC Pass

Drivers can now use RUC Pass to:

  • Buy Road User Charges online.

  • Track how many kilometres remain.

  • Check RUC, Warrant of Fitness and registration status.

  • View previous RUC and WoF history.

  • Add and manage up to 10 vehicles for free.

  • Receive alerts before RUC runs low.

  • Access previous orders and download invoices.

  • Use the service through iOS, Android or a desktop web browser.

The result is a focused RUC management platform designed to make compliance easier without turning an everyday vehicle into a tracking device.

“No hardware. No continuous GPS tracking. Just a clean way to keep your RUC organised and your vehicles compliant,” says Johnston.

Phase One of a wider rollout

This launch represents Phase One of the wider RUC Pass rollout.

While the app is now live, work is already continuing behind the scenes on the next stage of the platform, including broader distribution, payment and retail capability as New Zealand’s new eRUC provider framework takes shape.

RUC on Rails is progressing a number of commercial and integration discussions intended to extend RUC Pass beyond mobile and web and into physical retail environments across New Zealand.

The longer-term model is designed to give drivers more choice over where and how they buy RUC, including access through familiar retail locations and payment channels.

“Digital access is the starting point, not the end state,” says Johnston.

“The next phase is about making RUC Pass available in more places, through more channels, and in ways that fit naturally into how people already pay for everyday services.”

Further updates on the retail rollout and partner integrations will be shared as those arrangements progress.

RUC Pass is available now on iOS, Android and the web.
