Today marks a quiet but important milestone for us at RUC on Rails. We have officially launched RUC Hub, a purpose-built web platform dedicated to covering and demystifying the New Zealand Road User Charges (RUC) system. While we are not making a massive song and dance about it just yet preferring to let the site find its feet and allow SEO to do its thing, we are incredibly proud to finally share what has been an intensive internal project with the wider public.

The mission behind RUC Hub is simple: to make Road User Charges easier to access, understand, and manage for all New Zealand drivers. For too long, RUC information has been fragmented across various government and commercial sites. RUC Hub changes that by consolidating policy, economics, and industry data into one independent, "no-nonsense" resource.

"RUC Hub started as the 'engine room' for our own research," says Adam Johnston, CEO. "We realised that the intelligence we were gathering could provide massive value to everyday vehicle owners, fleet operators, and policy analysts. This launch is about taking those internal systems and turning them into a public asset that serves the common good, without ads or sponsors getting in the way."

The platform is one of the most comprehensive resources in the industry, featuring:

  • A Live Stats Dashboard: Watch real-time RUC and Fuel Excise Duty (FED) revenue data through animated counters that show the sheer scale of transport funding in New Zealand.

  • The RUC Calculator: A high-precision tool supporting all 28 NZTA vehicle types, including a weight band mode for heavy transport operators.

  • Market Intelligence & Directory: A database of over 50 organisations within the RUC ecosystem, complemented by a visual "Ecosystem Map" to show how the industry fits together.

  • Educational Explainers: A library of 28 guides covering everything from the absolute basics to complex policy and international case studies.

  • Multilingual Support: In our effort to be truly inclusive, the hub supports six languages: English, Te Reo Māori, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hindi, and Samoan.

From a technical standpoint, the team has pulled out all the stops. Briyarne, our CTO, oversaw the build using a modern stack of Next.js and React to ensure the site is fast, secure, and mobile-friendly.

"We didn't want a static, boring policy site," Briyarne says. "We built interactive features like the horizontal Timeline and the smart search functionality because we believe that engagement is the best way to help people learn. It’s about taking dry data and making it something you can actually explore."

Over the coming months, we will be making a more concerted effort to promote the Hub and its various tools, particularly to fleet managers and new EV owners who are navigating RUC for the first time. For now, we invite you to take a look under the hood and see how RUC Hub can help you manage your road user charges with more confidence.
