Our Internal Intelligence Is Going Public !
We are currently in the mid-development phase of RUC Hub. We’re taking our internal research systems and transforming them into a public-interest platform for New Zealand vehicle owners.
For the past year, the team at RUC on Rails has been operating largely behind the scenes. We have spent countless hours building high-performance internal systems to help us navigate the complexities of New Zealand’s Road User Charges. As our research deepened, we realised that the tools we were using should not just be for us. They should be for everyone.
We are currently in the thick of developing RUC Hub, a platform designed to be the definitive independent resource for RUC policy, statistics, and industry transparency. This project addresses a major gap in the market by aggregating and presenting RUC-related information in a way that is actually accessible to everyday vehicle owners and policy analysts alike. This effort aligns perfectly with our core company mission to make Road User Charges easier to access, understand, and manage for all New Zealand drivers.
"We started this project because we were frustrated by how fragmented RUC information was," says Adam Johnston, CEO. "We had already built the engine room, which were systems that could parse data and track market shifts, but it was all internal. We eventually asked ourselves why we were keeping this under the hood. RUC Hub is our way of making that intelligence public."
The development process is a significant collaborative effort. We are currently mid-flight, testing the platform with various user groups and industry stakeholders to ensure it actually solves real-world problems. Whether it is an everyday EV owner trying to understand their new obligations or a fleet manager budgeting for the next quarter, we want the user experience to be seamless.
A core part of this build relies on Kowalski, our proprietary market intelligence engine. While Kowalski has been working hard in the background for months, RUC Hub will be the first time its outputs are truly visible to the public. It is the brain that will power our upcoming comparison tools and resource libraries.
"It has been an intense few months for the tech team," says Briyarne, CTO. "We are currently refining the interactive elements, like the live revenue dashboards and the historical timelines. We are not just putting text on a page. We are building a living system. The feedback from our initial testing groups has been incredibly encouraging. It turns out people are actually quite keen for a bit of transparency in this space."
While the platform is not live just yet, the progress is looking great. We are focused on the finishing touches, such as ensuring the multilingual support is robust and that our privacy-first philosophy is felt in every tool we build. RUC Hub represents a shift for us. We are moving from a company that just builds tech to a company that empowers the public with it. We look forward to sharing the finished product with you soon.
