A New Vision ? RUC Compare: Bringing Transparency to Road User Charges
We are announcing our next project: RUC Compare. Inspired by successful models in the energy and broadband sectors, we are building New Zealand’s first independent RUC comparison engine.
At RUC on Rails, our mission has always been clear: to make Road User Charges easier to access, understand, and manage for all New Zealand drivers. As we have watched the RUC landscape evolve - particularly with the rapid rise of electric vehicles and the upcoming transition for petrol cars - we noticed a massive gap in the market. While New Zealanders can easily compare power plans or broadband providers through sites like Powerswitch or Power Compare, there is no equivalent for Road User Charges.
We believe that transparency shouldn't be a luxury. Choosing a RUC provider can have real financial implications, especially for families and fleet managers, yet the data is currently fragmented and difficult to compare side-by-side.
"We actually approached several established companies to see if they wanted to build a comparison tool for this space," says Adam Johnston, CEO. "The answer was consistently a version of 'it’s too niche' or 'not right now.' We didn't agree. We think Kiwi drivers deserve to know if they are getting a fair deal. Because nobody else was stepping up, we decided to do it ourselves. RUC Compare is being built to bring that same level of competitive pressure and clarity to the RUC market that we see in other utilities."
The vision for RUC Compare matches our core accessibility ethos. We don't just want to build a price list; we are engineering a platform that handles the heavy lifting of data collection and normalisation. Our goal is to create a system where you can:
Compare side-by-side: View not just the per-kilometre rates, but also the hidden convenience fees and hardware costs.
Personalise the results: Use a vehicle lookup system so the prices you see are specific to your car's weight class and type.
Evaluate Service Quality: Access verified reviews and an industry-first "Accessibility Score" that rates providers on how easy they are to deal with.
Briyarne, our CTO, is already mapping out the technical architecture using a modern framework. "We are building this to be an interactive engine, not a static page," Briyarne explains. "We want a distance slider that recalculates totals in real-time and 3D flip-cards that reveal the fine print without cluttering the screen. It is about making complex data actually usable on a smartphone."
We are currently in the early design phase and look forward to sharing our progress with the community. RUC Compare will be 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and most importantly, 100% free for the public to use.
It is time to bring a bit of sunlight to the RUC ecosystem.
